Without Words: Tim Munro & Stephen Emmerson

A journey through a century of German-language song, without words. Flautist Tim Munro and pianist Stephen Emmerson explore the liminal space between song and instrumental music. Franz Schubert’s dark Variations on Trockne Blumen and Clara Schumann’s radiant Romances are linked to lieder composers including Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Alma Mahler and Webern.

Emmerson and Munro have been friends for many years, but this will be the first full-length project they have devised and presented together. Without Words is part of the 4MBS Festival of Classics.

The pinnacle of refinement: dine in three delights of the classical era. Mozart adored composing piano concertos, and his Piano Concerto No. 27 is his final work of this form. Having written 26 others before it, the maturity and artistry of this concerto is, unsurprisingly, astounding. Australian pianist Daniel de Borah has a history of acclaimed Mozart interpretations, many alongside Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici, and the duo offer grace and sensitivity in their approach to this miraculous work.

Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 (La passione) is a rare touch of darkness in the composer’s catalogue, as the sombre and stormy reign supreme. But don’t worry, it’s not all serious, Rossini’s La Cenerentola Overture is bright, bold and energetic.

A Chorus Line examines one day in the lives of seventeen dancers, all vying for a spot in the “chorus line” of a Broadway musical. After the first round of cuts, Zach, the director, asks each dancer to speak about themselves. Discomfort opens into revelation, confession leads to redemption, and within the bright, outwardly homogenous chorus, the audience begins to see each dancer’s individuality. From Cassie, the star who just needs the “music and the mirror and the chance to dance,” to Val, a small-town girl with a brand-new big-town body, to Mike, who took his sister’s place in dance class, saying “I can do that.”

Based on real Broadway dancers’ stories, A Chorus Line is a funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly honest musical capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition.

This special 50th anniversary production, performed in conjunction with Griffith University’s 50th anniversary celebrations, will be performed by all current Bachelor of Musical Theatre students, and feature 3rd years in principal roles.

In advance of the Australian premiere performance of Jörg Widmann’s novel interpretation of this seminal work, Benjamin Appl and Sholto Kynoch will lead a musical-lecture style exploration of Schumann’s stunning Dichterliebe – A Poet’s Love.  In converation with the audience, with students and with one another, this event is a perfect companion concert to Ensemble Q’s A Poet’s Love at QPAC on Monday 25 August.  Sholto and Benjamin will workshop selections of the cycle alongside QASF student duos.  This event will feature a Q&A session.

We were first introduced to Raymond Briggs’ magical, awe-inspiring world of The Snowman in 1978, and his picture book was developed into an Oscar-nominated film just four years later. Directed by Dianne Jackson and featuring an original score by Howard Blake, the animated film brings Briggs’ visionary tale to life, following James and his Snowman as they embark on a wondrous journey one winter’s night.

Over the past 40 years, The Snowman has firmly become part of the fabric of Christmas and winter celebrations. The dreamlike narrative still perfectly captures the imagination and wonder of childhood, continuing to be enjoyed and embraced across generations.

We were first introduced to Raymond Briggs’ magical, awe-inspiring world of The Snowman in 1978, and his picture book was developed into an Oscar-nominated film just four years later. Directed by Dianne Jackson and featuring an original score by Howard Blake, the animated film brings Briggs’ visionary tale to life, following James and his Snowman as they embark on a wondrous journey one winter’s night.
